about us
The purpose of this sorority is to promote sisterhood, scholarship, leadership, and Asian-American awareness in the university and in the community, while encouraging the expression of the individual. The sorority is composed of highly motivated women with diverse backgrounds, interests, and fields of study. Each woman, however, shares a strong bond of love, friendship, and sisterhood. With a supportive network of sisters, each woman can strive to fulfill her personal, academic, and career goals.
National History
alpha Kappa Delta Phi was established at the University of California, Berkeley in the fall of 1989. Four headstrong visionaries: Susan Kim, Fannie Pon, Jill Yoshimura, and Reina Yuan, initiated the concept of having an organization that would provide them as well as other young college women the opportunity to experience sisterhood, and to promote what they felt was integral to the development of successful women. After proposing their ideas to women at the Berkeley campus, they along with ten strong and willful fellow women, became the founding sisters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi.
Together as the charter class, they dedicated themselves to establishing a strong and lasting organization that would foster not only sisterhood, but scholarship, service, leadership and Asian American awareness as well. The founding sisters: Betty Chu, Karin Co, Susan Kim, Nancy Lee, Sherri Leung, Annie Loo, Belinda Ma, Anita Ng, Serene Ngin, Fannie Pon, Josie Sun, Daisy Wu, Jill Yoshimura, and Reina Yuan, came together to share one another's goals for a promising union. These ideals were to later set the foundation and purpose for alpha Kappa Delta Phi.
The love and generosity that each member had for the organization was instrumental to the growth of alpha Kappa Delta Phi's reputation as a sorority, as well as to the forging of unbreakable friendships. In its first step towards achieving widespread acknowledgement, alpha Kappa Delta Phi was recognized by the College Panhellenic Association of Berkeley, California on February 7, 1990. This date is celebrated annually as National Founders' Day. The sisterhood has since then spread to prominent universities around the nation. To meet the needs of the growing sisterhood, the National Board of alpha Kappa Delta Phi was established in May of 1993 at the National Convention in Santa Barbara, California.
It is the sincere wish of the founding sisters that alpha Kappa Delta Phi continue to promote the ideals on which the organization was founded and to provide each woman with the resources, unique sisterly support and understanding to achieve her goals in life.
The Diamonds of new England
Eight dedicated women: Jennifer Li, Kuangmei Lin, Naomi Muraoka, Anita Ramakrishna, Estefania Tam, Elizabeth Tottenham, Susan Tran, and Kimberly Yan, came together during the spring of 1996 with the vision to find a sorority that meets the needs of Asian-American interest women. It was their goal to create and share the great vision of eternal sisterhood with many others who share the same vision as they do. Even though there were many uncertainties, they held on to each other and were determined to bring Asian awareness and unity to their university. As our Charter sister Susan Tran said: Robert Frost is most noted for his famous last line, "Two roads diverged into a wood, and I - I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference." Let us travel the road, but we need not do it alone. Fortunately, we have each other... and that will make all the difference. If you wish to travel this road with us, please join us at our rush events!
National Philanthropy
Our national philanthropy is Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA). Together, we have a better chance at raising breast cancer awareness and fighting breast cancer. We are striving to save the lives of our grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, friends, etc. Every year, we participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the Race for the Cure, and we raise money for the Susan G. Komen Fund in countless ways.
Though the Susan G. Komen Foundation and breast cancer awareness is our philanthropy, we do not only support this cause. In the past, we have also helped and raised money for the Tsunami Relief, the Katrina Relief, the Red Cross, and the China Care Fund.
